Vampyr can be played either with a controller or keyboard and mouse. Basic keys to move around, when using a keyboard, are W-A-S-D.
Begin a new game[]
When starting the game there are three options to play the game: Story Mode, Normal Mode and Hard Mode.
Story Mode[]
Play vampyr with low challenge. This will cut an important part of the experience, but will allow you to enjoy the story and explore with little danger:
- - Combat is very easy.
- - There is no reward for finishing this mode without killing any citizens.
- For the player who first play this game, I would like recommend this mode in your first play round, as you can focus on the story and no need worry about the enemy too much. You can decide each citizen's destine by your will and not think too much on the trophies or what kind of ending you get. Just remember, if you would like to get all Trophies, backup your game save before final boss fight with Harriet Jones, as you may need this game save to finish some trophies in future.
Normal Mode[]
Play the original Vampyr experience:
- - Character progression is faster if you kill citizens.
- - Combat difficulty is linked to the number of citizens you kill.
- To those who are good at action games or want 2nd round and finish trophies collection, this would be your choice. If you try to get some trophies like Not even once, London's burning, and this was your 2nd time play, better to check your previous save to see if those can easier to get or not, normally embrace each citizen you can will trigger it.
Hard Mode[]
Play Vampyr in a more challenging way:
- - Your power as a vampire is tied to the citizens you choose to Embrace.
- - Enemies are harder to kill and hit harder.
- - Experience points rewarded by killing enemies in combat are reduced.
- So no meaning to select this mode unless you want to challenge yourself. No trophies related with this mode, so if you just want to enjoy this game and unlock all trophies, do not choose this mode.

Interaction[]
After the introduction of Jonathan and his new "life", he must find a way to find a save harbour after he encounters some hunters who are after him. If Jonathan is not in combat, he should speak to as many citizens as possible. Just get close to any of the citizens and an F icon should flash up. Press F and start the dialogue with the citizen.
Citizen Hints[]
After that, the player receives several dialogue options. With most citizens, Jonathan can have a conversation about them but also other citizens. Some citizens have a relationship with each other and can share more information. Some options need hints, which Jonathan first has to discover through more small talk or from reading notes and other findings.
"Eavesdropping" is also a way to find out more about certain characters. Use the Vampire senses "V" and look if there is a designated location where Jonathan should be placed to listen to the conversation. This should give Jonathan a new hint and he can return to start a new dialogue with the citizen(s).
Embrace[]
As a vampire, you can suck blood from others (Immortal or Mortal).
During the battle, this was very common, but for citizens you can also suck their blood, which is called the "Embrace".
Embracing citizens provides a massive EXP boot, which helps your evolution a lot, but it will also bring
some consequences, such as district status becoming worse, and stronger Boss you will learn finally.
The EXP you gain from Embrace will depend on the "Blood Quality"
___________________________________________________________
The BLOOD QUALITY indicates how much XP
you will obtain from a particular Citizen.
The higher the BLOOD QUALITY, the more XP
you get.
___________________________________________________________
The health status of the citizen and how many HINTS unlocked will impact the Blood Quality.
Not like bite during battle, you can't just walk close to a citizen and bite him/her.
You need to take him/her to a place where nobody can see, and to doing this you must "Mesmerise" him/her first.
___________________________________________________________
To drink the BLOOD of your prey, you first need
to MESMERISE them to lead them out of sight
from others.
Your MESMERISE Level must be equal or higher
than the Citizen's resistance.
___________________________________________________________
To avoid others find out what you are doing, you will need to find "Shadows" place.
___________________________________________________________
Follow the red trail to lead your prey into the
shadows.

Crafting[]
Jonathan can also interact with objects like workbenches in hiding places. There he has enough peace to make the items he needs.
Crafting is simple and Jonathan can prepare Medical treatments for Citizens, Serums (useful in combat) and Weapon upgrades.
Jonathan also can analyze blood samples and retrieve useful ingredients from loot.

Two-Handed Weapons[]
Used to parry or inflict heavy stun damage.
Ranged Weapons[]
Jonathan can equip Pistols, Revolvers etc and cause standard damage and stun damage. Ammunition is limited, but some enemies from Guard of Priwen drop Ammo and sometimes Jonathan can find bullets in containers.
Vampyr Evolution[]
Jonathan receives XP from killing enemies or from drinking the blood of Citizens. This XP can be used to evolve his Vampire skills.
He can spend experience points on ACTIVE SKILLS, split in Defensive, Aggressive, Tactical and Ultimate and on PASSIVE SKILLS, which influence Body, Blood, Bite and Science.
To proceed in his evolution, Jonathan needs a hideout where he can spend the day to recover and to craft items. Hideouts always have a bed, workbench and a suitcase for ammunition.
Vampyr terms and definitions[]
- Leech - a term used by Guard of Priwen members for Vampires.
- Embrace - to drink a person's blood and kill them. Deceased people receive a gravestone in the Stonebridge Cemetery. This action also leads to some changes in Jonathan's appearance. Without ever using embrace, he still appears sickly pale, but embracing a Citizen will gain him these bloodshot eyes, which show more his vampiric nature.
- Charm - another option in some dialogues. An alternative to embrace and turn.
- Spare - another option in some dialogues. An alternative to embrace and turn.
- Turn - option for some citizens. Jonathan will bite this citizen to create a new Vampire.
- Mesmerize - a mental technique of Vampires to subdue citizens and to make them willless, so they will follow the Vampire to a secluded place where "embracing" is possible without witnesses.
